They're named after Sunn Amplifiers; the band's logo is exactly the same as the brand's. They added the O))) affix to their name (one could read the logo in this way).
Greg Anderson also runs the record label Southern Lord. Stephen O'Malley is also a graphic artist most noteable for doing artwork and layouts for Sunn O))), Boris, Khanate, Scum and various posters and advertisements for bands and book releases.
Masami Akita (a.k.a. Japanoise artist Merzbow) remixed two tracks on Flight of the Behemoth.
Earth and Melvins legend Joe Preston also joined to help write and record the White1 album.
